South African audiences are set for a compelling return to one of the country’s most turbulent chapters with the release of Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun, a new apartheid-era drama starring King Monada, Cornet Mamabolo and Mashabela Galane.

Set during the 1986 military occupation of the University of the North, widely known as Turfloop, the film blends political tension, personal sacrifice and youthful defiance in a story that revisits the student resistance movement at the height of apartheid repression.

The production marks a major career milestone for award-winning musician King Monada, who makes his acting debut in the film. Best known for his chart-topping hits and energetic stage presence, the Limpopo star steps into a dramatic role that introduces audiences to a new side of his talent.

Leading the cast is Cornet Mamabolo, celebrated for his television career and now taking on the role of anti-apartheid activist Peter Mokaba. Mamabolo also serves as an executive producer on the project, adding a significant behind-the-scenes responsibility to his performance.

Veteran entertainer Mashabela Galane joins the ensemble with a role that balances the film’s intense political themes with moments of humanity and warmth. His presence is expected to resonate strongly with audiences familiar with his work in comedy, theatre and television.

Directed by Tebogo Malope, the film follows a young student drawn into the underground resistance as armed forces tighten their grip on the campus. Through his journey, the story explores fear, courage and the difficult choices faced by a generation determined to challenge injustice.

Filmed largely in Limpopo, including locations closely associated with the historic events, Studying Under the Barrel of a Gun arrives as both an entertainment release and a tribute to the students whose activism helped shape South Africa’s democratic future.

Industry observers have already identified the project as one of the year’s most anticipated local productions, thanks to its blend of historical storytelling, star power and regional pride. For fans of South African cinema, the combination of King Monada’s screen debut, Mamabolo’s dramatic transformation and Galane’s veteran presence makes the film a standout addition to the country’s growing slate of homegrown features.

The film is expected to premiere later this year.
